To smoke or not to smoke

smoking-killsUnfortunately it’s not as easy at is sounds. I have almost 1 month since I quit smoking – why? – because I was not feeling good anymore. Along the way ( especially in the first 7 days ) I’ve had many thoughts to smoke a cigarette or at least a puff – guess what? I didn’t and I’m proud of me.

Maybe it doesn’t look like this, but unfortunately, tobacco kills. I’ve recently read an updated article from WHO that blew my mind. It looks tobacco kills up to half of its users – more than 7 million people each year and approximatively 800 000 of them are the results of exposure to secondhand smoke. What’s freaking me out is the fact that at this moment there are more than 1 billion smokers in the world.

Even if I have more than 3 weeks since I didn’t even touch a cigarette, I’m still looking for motivational things to keep me away from them because I know that at some point even after a few months, I may become vulnerable and start smoking again. There are a ton of applications, videos, books, websites, blogs, etc. to help you quit smoking or to keep you motivated but not all of them are quality content ( however this is another story about the decreasing percent of quality content out there – plan to write an article about this ) – that’s why I’ll share with you Smoke Free – mobile app that helps me a lot to stay motivated and away from cigarettes.

Even if you smoke for 10+ years – it’s never too late to quit” – unfortunately, I don’t remember exactly where I’ve read an article about this but you’ll be amazed by how smart and automated is your body.

Human body it’s capable of healing itself if you stop smoking ( this is why it’s never too late to quit smoking ) and here are some interesting facts about this:

If you quit smoking RIGHT NOW:

Within 6 hours

  • Your heart rate slows and your blood pressure becomes more stable.

Within a day

  • Almost all of the nicotine is out of your bloodstream.
  • The level of carbon monoxide in your blood has dropped and oxygen can more easily reach your heart and muscles.
  • Your fingertips become warmer and your hands steadier.

Within a week

  • Your sense of taste and smell may improve.
  • Your lungs’ natural cleaning system is starting to recover, becoming better at removing mucus, tar, and dust from your lungs (exercise helps to clear out your lungs).
  • You have higher blood levels of protective antioxidants such as vitamin C.

Within 3 months

  • You’re coughing and wheezing less.
  • Your immune system is beginning its recovery so your body is better at fighting off infection.
  • Your blood is less thick and sticky and blood flow to your hands and feet has improved.

Within 6 months

  • Your risk of lung cancer is lower than that of a continuing smoker (provided the disease was not already present when you quit).

After 15 years

  • Your risk of heart attack and stroke is close to that of a person who has never smoked.

That’s awesome, right? 🙂 this is what I said as well when I’ve read these facts for the first time – I’ve felt that it’s not too late to do it.

I’m not sure if this article will inspire someone to quit smoking ( even if I hope will do ) however, here is a video that for me personally had a strong emotional impact.


You can start today to free-up your body – anyone can do it! I’m not saying that I’ve already done this – I’m in the same place like you are, I’m weak and vulnerable but I’ll keep fighting – take action today!

I hope with this article at least to inspire others and make them think twice before lighting up the next cigarette. Other persons inspired me with their articles and now I’m just giving back something – take care guys! 🙂
